When do you need professional drain unblocking?

Drains get blocked – it’s a fact of modern life. Sometimes we can use a home remedy to get them working again but there are times when you need to call out the professionals.

How does drain unblocking work?

The first thing you can expect from a professional drainage unblocking is a pipe inspection. This will provide the information required for the correct equipment to be used. As well as discovering what exactly is causing the problem the inspection can also reveal whether there are any leaks or pipes that need to be repaired.

Cameras will then be used to get a proper view of the pipe system, so your plumber can access parts that they can’t see or otherwise reach.

For drainage unblocking, various tools can be used to solve the problem. They include:

The plunger

The plunger is probably the most familiar of all drainage unblocking tools and it can be used for minor blockages.

Manual drain snake

This is a piece of equipment that looks like a long cable with a corkscrew at one end and a handle at the other. This is placed into the drain and the handle is cranked to move the snake through the drain to break through the clog.

Motorised snake drain

The motorised snake drain operates on the same principles as the manual snake drain but it will be used on bigger pipes and ones that are harder to unclog.

Hydro jet

This works by sending pressured water through pipes to break down drain build-up. Hydro jets get rid of the blockage but they’re also effective for cleaning drains.

Hair Snake

Hair is one of the common causes of drain blockage. We lose around 50-100 hairs a day and when the strands become knotted there’s a risk that your drains will become clogged up. Fortunately, your plumber has a special tool to deal with this, called the hair snake.

How to tell if your drains are blocked

  1. Unpleasant smells from the drain
  2. Overflowing drains
  3. Drainage slows down
  4. Gurgling sounds in pipes
  5. You see water pooling in the garden

What causes blocked drains?

Indoor blockages may occur because someone has flushed an object down the loo. These include: sanitary products, paper towels, wipes, disposable nappies, or other hard to flush. And as mentioned above, hair can also cause major blockages.

Why should you hire professionals to unblock your drains?

As you can see, there are many reasons why your drains can become blocked. A professional will be able to expertly identify the problem and deal with it effectively with the correct tools. They will also be able to spot potential problems caused by the blockage such as leaks and cracks in the pipes. Problems that could cost you dear further down the line.
